Meeting 387 - January 7, 2008

Meeting Number
387

Executive Council met at 11 a.m. in 611 Allen Hall. Present were Dr. Peter Rabideau, presiding, Dr. Bill Kibler, John Rush, Joy Odom, Jeremy Johnson, Mike McGrevey, Dr. Bob Wolverton, Dr. Melissa Mixon, Dr. Mary Alexander, Charles Guest, Joe Farris, Don Zant and Julie Fulgham.

Dr. Kibler recommended that the Northeast Village group of four residence halls be formally named "Donald W. Zacharias Village," in honor the former president who served from 1986 through 1997. The recommendation was previously endorsed by the Naming of Facilities Committee. The Executive Council recommended approval. The naming recommendation will be submitted to the Board of Trustees for approval.

Mr. Rush presented for approval a revised version of Operating Policy 41.02, Naming Opportunities at MSU. Other than editorial changes, the proposed new elements of the policy were: the addition of an endowed faculty fellowship naming opportunity for $100,000; a provision that no building or facility may be named in honor of a university employee who has been separated from the institution for less than two years, except in extenuating circumstances; and a provision that the university reserves the right to remove a name from a facility as a result of changing circumstances that would cause the naming to not reflect positively on the university. The Council recommended approval.
