We see many visitors on campus this time of year for many different events and activities. From Bulldog Family Weekend to football gamedays to concerts, exhibitions, and lectures, there’s something for everyone. It’s also a great time to showcase our academic programs, research enterprise, and commitment to service and community engagement. United States Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and United States Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith are among the many visitors we’ve welcomed to campus recently.

After a busy summer of history-making milestones, full Orientation sessions, and transformative construction projects, the new academic year is well underway for a record number of first-time Bulldogs, thousands of returning students, and our faculty and staff. Along the way this month, we’ve celebrated the opening of the Perry Food Hall in one of our most iconic buildings after a major, year-long renovation. Perry’s original beauty and history have been preserved while creating a thoroughly modern and highly functional dining facility.

While summer is a great time for getting away from work and spending time with family and friends, the work hasn’t stopped here at MSU. We continue to be focused on developing innovative academic degree programs that address critical workforce needs in our state, and we’ve recently announced several new ones. That includes a new Doctor of Physical Therapy program at MSU-Meridian that the IHL Board of Trustees approved in June. It’s a significant addition to our growing health sciences portfolio.

You might think it was quiet around campus this time of year – but June has been anything but quiet! We started the month with a bang by announcing Brian O’Connor as our new head baseball coach. We welcomed Coach O’Connor and his family to Mississippi State with a truly special celebration at Dudy Noble Field.

We have concluded another successful academic year at Mississippi State University. The month of May has seen us celebrate thousands of graduates during commencement season in Starkville and in Meridian. It is one of my great honors as president to celebrate our newest alumni with their family, friends, and faculty, staff, and administrators who have been part of their academic journey.

Last week, we were thrilled to see biochemistry major Claire Green named as our university’s newest Truman Scholar, which is awarded to the nation’s best and brightest students who are planning to pursue careers in public service.

Leadership Matters | December 2024

This week sees the end of the fall semester with final exams wrapping up and commencement in Meridian and Starkville. In addition to honoring our newest Mississippi State graduates, on Friday afternoon [Dec. 13] we will honor Lewis Mallory, Jr., with an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree. He is a true Bulldog and most deserving of our university’s highest honor.
