Meeting 344 - August 14, 2003
Executive Council met at 11 a.m. in 611 Allen Hall. Present were Dr. Charles Lee, presiding, Dr. George Verrall, Gaddis Hunt, Daniel Bryant, Lowell Wilson, Dr. Walter Diehl, Larry Templeton, Dennis Prescott, Dr. Jimmy Abraham, Dr. Jonathan Pote, Josh Blades, Charles Guest, Dr. Canny Cheatham, Joe Farris, Carson Cook, Dr. Gary Pike, Chuck Rivenbaugh, and Ann Bell.
Dr. Pote presented for first reading a proposed revision of the Policy on Intellectual Property.
Mr. Hunt presented for first reading a proposed revision of the Human Resources Management policy on compensation.
Dr. Verrall presented for first reading a proposed revision of Academic Operating Procedure 13.23 on Faculty Workload.
Dr. Verrall presented for first reading a proposed Comprehensive Policies and Goals for Formal Distance Education.
Dr. Verrall presented for first reading a proposed policy on Management of Information Technology Resources.
Dr. Verrall presented for first reading a proposed revision of AOP 12.09 on Class Attendance and Reporting.
Dr. Verrall presented for first reading a proposed revision of AOP 12.11 on Degree Requirements.
Dr. Verrall presented for first reading a proposed revision of AOP 12.29 on Freshman Entrance Requirements.
Dr. Verrall proposed a "pop-up" messaging system for emergency announcements that could be implemented by Information Technology Services. Emergency announcements would be initiated by the Police Department. The council recommended that a policy for management of such a system be developed.
Dr. Lee noted that the Board of Trustees has appointed a task force of university presidents to review the issue of possible consolidation of administrative computing resources among institutions.
Dr. Lee reported that he had sent a letter to all community/junior college presidents suggesting a joint examination of students' writing skills and any needed follow up.
Dr. Lee reported that the IHL Board of Trustees will meet on the MSU campus in October.
Mr. Hunt reported on the creation of a Parking Services unit, which has offices in the Roberts Building.
Mr. Hunt reported that gas/diesel turbine generators for a planned campus power plant are now being built.
Mr. Blades announced that the university-community "Bulldog Bash" event is scheduled for downtown Starkville on Sept. 26.
Dr. Diehl announced that a reception is planned for Oct. 3 in observance of the 50th anniversary of the Faculty Senate and the 30th anniversary of the Courses and Curriculum Committee.
Mr. Wilson reported that the Professional and Support Staff Advisory Council is sponsoring a health fair in September and a financial seminar and stress management seminar in October.
