Meeting 319 - February 5, 2001
Executive Council met at 11 a.m. at 611 Allen Hall. Present were Dr. Malcolm Portera, presiding, Jan Bryant, Gaddis Hunt, Larry Templeton, Jenny Reeves, Dr. Bob Altenkirch, Dr. Charles Lee, Dr. Dan Embree, Dr. Brad Carter, Dr. Roy Ruby, Dennis Prescott, Dr. David Cole, Daniel Bryant, Charles Guest, Joe Farris, Dr. Melvin Ray, Dr. Ann Bailey, and architects Brad Stringer and Bob Luke.
Mr. Stringer of Cooke, Douglas, Farr, Lemons architectural firm presented the site plan for renovation of McCain Hall. The plan calls for seat walls, planters, brick pavers, and light standards surrounding the building. The council recommended approval of the plan.
Dr. Ruby recommended approval of the conceptual plan for renovation of Hathorn and Creswell residence halls. Plans presented by Mr. Luke call for additions to the front of the buildings to enlarge the lobby area, the addition of elevated roofs, and the creation of courtyard areas accessible only to residents. The council recommended approval of the concept, with the provision that parking lot needs also are to be studied as the plan progresses.
Dr. Ruby recommended that the area housing the student newspaper and student yearbook be designated the Henry Meyer Student Media Center in honor of the long-time advisor to The Reflector, as recommended by the Naming of Facilities Committee. The name is to be applied to the space used for the designated function and not for a particular physical location. The council recommended approval.
Dr. Ruby recommended approval of a revised operating policy on Satisfactory Academic Progress, OP 91.150. Such a policy is required in order for students to be eligible for federal financial aid. The proposed changes would make the policy more consistent with the Academic Affairs operating policy on Probation, Suspension, and Dismissal. The council recommended approval.
Dr. Altenkirch presented for initial review a proposed policy and procedure statement on Intellectual Property to replace Policy 70.06, Patents and Inventions. The policy previously has been reviewed by the Faculty Senate and will be considered by Executive Council at its next meeting.
Dr. Portera announced that he would appoint an ad hoc committee to recommend parking and traffic policies and procedures to be in place during home football game weekends this fall, and requested nominations of committee members from the Faculty Senate, Student Association, Staff Council, Academic Affairs and Student Affairs.
Dr. Portera commented that the university is maintaining its momentum despite financial constraints.
The meeting adjourned at 11:45 a.m.
