Meeting 310 - February 28, 2000
Attending were Dr. Malcolm Portera, presiding, Dr. David Cole, Matt Allen, Ms. Leah Norman, Larry Templeton, Dr. Robert Cooper, Dennis Prescott, Dr. Roy Ruby, Ms. Susan Everett, Dr. Bob Altenkirch, Mike Rackley, Dr. Melvin Ray, Charles Guest, Joe Farris, Dr. Roy Ikenberry, Gaddis Hunt, and Danny Kemp.
Dr. Portera noted that few agenda items have been submitted for recent meetings and recommended that the council meet monthly, rather than weekly, with special meetings to be called as needed. There were no objections. The council typically will meet on the first Monday of each month.
Mr. Rackley presented a report on Banner performance problems encountered during spring registration in January. Although performance returned to normal, the cause of the poor performance episode remains unclear. Technical specialists from the Oracle and/or SCT companies will visit campus within the next two weeks to provide first-hand assistance in attempting to diagnose the problem, and will be on hand during pre-registration in March and April. Information Technology Services will in the meantime seek additional training for support staff, add performance-monitoring tools, try to improve portions of Banner code, and investigate the need for additional hardware.
Mr. Hunt provided an update on construction and renovation projects. Renovated Hilbun Hall is to be occupied this summer. The Bureau of Building and Grounds has agreed to the addition of a mansard roof to McCain Hall as part of that renovation project. Bids for renovation of Montgomery Hall will be taken this summer. Work will begin this summer on an extension of the central cooling loop. Construction of the north entrance road will begin in June. Improvements to Blackjack Road should start this summer. Design of the new landscape architecture building should be complete this spring. The new Swalm Chemical Engineering Building should be finished in April. Construction of the bike path along Barr Avenue is awaiting federal Department of Transportation design approval. Architects have been selected for the design of an Alumni and Foundation building. Repairs to the Chapel of Memories tower should begin this summer. Bids for expansion of the football stadium are to be opened in April.
Mr. Farris presented a schedule for updating the priorities and goals for 2000-2004, with an update and progress report to be completed by May 1 following a period of campus review and comment.
