Meeting 293 - June 7, 1999
Executive Council met at 11 a.m. in 611 Allen Hall. Present were Dr. Malcolm Portera, presiding, Dr. Euel Coats, Ms. Leah Norman, Matt Allen, Larry Templeton, Dr. Roy Ruby, Dr. Rodney Foil, Dr. Bob Altenkirch, Dennis Prescott, Bill Broyles, Dr. George Rent, Dr. Melvin Ray, Joe Farris, Dr. Roy Ikenberry, Johnnie Haley, and Dr. Bob Cooper.
Dr. Portera commented on the success of the U.S. Women's Open Golf Championship at Old Waverly during the previous week. Mississippi State contributed in numerous ways to the tournament.
Dr. Portera reported that the Board of Trustees will include a request for state matching dollars for research in the FY 2001 budget request.
Ms. Norman reported on salary increases, enrollment projections, and other information from other Southeastern Conference universities following the annual SEC business officers meeting.
Dr. Altenkirch reported on research proposals and awards for April. Awards for the month totaled $6.6 million, bringing the year to date total through April to $54.6 million. The number of proposals submitted is up 7 percent from the comparable date during the previous year.
Mr. Allen inquired about the status of a pending proposal to institute a fall break for students. The suggestion was referred to the Deans Council last year. Dr. Rent is to follow up to secure a response from the Deans Council.
Mr. Allen inquired about the status of proposed policy on the use of voice stress analyzers. Dr. Ruby said plans to use the equipment in police investigations have been put on hold indefinitely pending further study of its reliability.
The meeting adjourned at approximately 11:30 a.m.
