Meeting 287 - March 1, 1999
Executive Council met at 11 a.m. at 611 Allen Hall. Present were Dr. Malcolm Portera, presiding, Dr. David Cole, Dr. Euel Coats, Dr. Joe Thompson, Larry Templeton, Dr. Roy Ruby, Brad Sweet, Ms. Leah Norman, Joe Farris, Bill Broyles, Dr. Melvin Ray, Charles Guest, Dr. Roy Ikenberry, Dr. Jonathan Pote, and Matt Allen.
Mr. Sweet introduced Matt Allen, who is the unopposed candidate for Student Association president in this month's student elections.
Ms. Norman presented for concept approval a proposal to locate one or more automatic teller machines on the traffic island in the Garner Hall parking lot. The proposal will be referred to the Campus Planning and Development Committee.
Dr. Pote presented the summary of external awards for January. Awards for the month totaled $2.6 million, bringing the year-to-date total to $37.8 million. Dr. Pote noted that February awards were up significantly.
Dr. Cole reported that he has scheduled a meeting to review plans for summer camps on campus. Athletics and Student Affairs will participate.
Dr. Ikenberry reported that he will visit the University of South Carolina to study data management operations.
Dr. Portera reported on the previous week's meetings with representatives of federal funding agencies and Congressional staffs.
Dr. Portera reported that the executive director of the Association of Research Libraries is visiting the campus to work with library staff on the university's pursuit of ARL status.
Dr. Portera commended university students for the weekend's fund-raising dance marathon on behalf of LeBonheur Children's Hospital.
Dr. Portera reported that he has requested more information on plans for improvements to Hardy Street, particularly concerning the proposal to eliminate on-street parking.
Dr. Portera reported that the previous week's new faculty orientation tour to the Gulf Coast was successful.
Dr. Cole reported that the Honorary Degree Committee has recommended names to the president for his consideration. The university's first honorary degrees will be presented during spring 1999 commencement ceremonies.
