Meeting 244 - October 27, 1997
Executive Council met at 9 a.m. at 611 Allen Hall. Present were Dr. Donald Zacharias, presiding, Dr. Rodney Foil, Dr. Roy Ruby, Dr. Leslie Bauman, Dr. Derek Hodgson, Dr. Melvin Ray, Ms. Patsy Douglas, Ms. Leah Norman, Mike Richardson, Dr. R. D. Ikenberry, Charles Guest and Joe Farris.
Dr. Ray recommended approval of a proposed policy on the role of the Information Technologies Oversight Committee and reviewed some of the activities of ITOC during the past year. The council recommended approval of the policy.
Dr. Ruby presented for discussion the proposed university Statement of Values as modified by the Executive Council during the previous week's meeting. Dr. Ruby recommended that the document be sent to the Faculty Senate, Student Association and Staff Council for consideration. The council recommended that course and suggested that the student, faculty and staff bodies be asked to indicate approval or dissatisfaction with the document as a whole.
Dr. Ruby distributed brochures for the new John K. Bettersworth Leadership Lectures and described the program for sending university speakers to high schools and community colleges.
Mr. Farris distributed an advertisement from the Chronicle of Higher Education describing the Croft Institute for International Relations at the University of Mississippi.
Dr. Zacharias reported on an inquiry from a student interested in 24-hour operation of the library. Dr. Hodgson noted that costs and security would be concerns. Mr. Richardson reported that some students have a need for access on Sunday mornings. Dr. Hodgson said that longer operating hours on Sunday would be considered.
