We may be nearing the end of the year, but that doesn’t mean things are slowing down at Mississippi State. Dynamic growth, exciting achievements and new beginnings are still happening throughout the Bulldog community.
For starters, basketball is back in The Hump! And that means commencement is returning to the new and improved Humphrey Coliseum on Dec. 8. At MSU-Meridian, fall commencement will take place Dec. 7. I’ll have the honor of awarding degrees to graduates and sharing a special milestone in their lives. Ceremonies also create cherished moments for family, friends and faculty when they see their graduates’ dreams come true.
MSU newcomers are also in the spotlight. Much of our momentum has been powered by the largest class of first-time students in university history along with the highest number of freshman applications. That means we’re the No. 1 college choice for Mississippi’s high school graduates. Last year, we also awarded a record number of degrees across all levels. These gains are proof that our strategic enrollment planning process known as Transforming MSU has kept us anchored in our values and focused on the future.
Ongoing philanthropy is another driver of growth, including a $4 million gift from the Luckyday Foundation to fund the construction of Luckyday Tower, a living and learning community for freshman Luckyday Scholars. It will be located within Azalea Hall, a residence complex at the corner of Barr Avenue and George Perry Street set to open in August 2025.
We’re also starting a new chapter for Mississippi State football under new head coach Jeff Lebby, considered one of the game’s best and most accomplished offensive strategists. During a celebration on campus in his honor, Coach Lebby received an enthusiastic Bulldog welcome and expressed his excitement about leading MSU’s football program into the future.
With so many amazing activities going on, we’re also making sure we celebrate the holiday season. In November, I joined students for a tree lighting ceremony and a menorah lighting ceremony on the Union Plaza followed by two weeks of Hail State Holidays events led by the Center for Student Activities.
Closing the year with thankfulness, fellowship and goodwill always sets the right tone for the year ahead. It’s also a time to reflect on the special bond we share as members of the Bulldog family. Here’s wishing everyone a safe and joyful holiday season and a healthy, happy New Year.
