From my vantage point as the 2023 Commencement speaker, it was an unforgettable experience looking out into a sea of 4,100 graduates in their mortarboards, surrounded by the beaming pride of their families and loved ones in Davis Wade Stadium.
My message that day focused on MSU’s role in preparing students to make the world a better place, not only by providing an outstanding education but also instilling core values of integrity, a strong work ethic and respect for others. Those qualities are exemplified by two esteemed alumni who received honorary Doctor of Public Service degrees during commencement ceremonies—Rodger L. Johnson and Thomas B. “Tommy” Nusz.
Summer marks a transitional time for graduates as well as students, many of whom are continuing their academic journeys at Mississippi State through summer classes, research projects, camps, orientation and other campus activities. No matter the season, there’s always an abundance of growth and enrichment opportunities at MSU.
We’re making sure those opportunities also extend to adult learners with the new College of Professional and Continuing Studies, which was created by merging the centers for Distance Education and Continuing Education. Our newest college will create and enhance pathways to academic success for non-traditional students and position MSU as a leader in serving the needs of this fast-growing group.
Two construction projects underway at MSU – the Jim and Thomas Duff Center to be built on the current site of McCarthy Gymnasium and our new High Performance Computing Data Center to be located adjacent to the building that houses MSU’s supercomputers in the Thad Cochran Research Park – reflect our continued growth and leadership in key fields.
Proof is all around that Mississippi State is busy making the world a smarter, safer, healthier and better place. What a great time to be a member of the Bulldog family!
